While there are cogent arguments for either choosing a large niche or one that is smaller when you are discovering the right niche in internet marketing, it is how you drive traffic and build a list that will mean success or failure.
Some take the view that you must select a niche that is not too big as the competition will be too heavy. Conversely others will say that choosing a small niche is less likely of success die to the lack of potential searchers.
The answer is probably somewhere in between - with more weight to being given to a choice in larger niche markets.
One reliable marketer I know believes that there is no issue with choosing large competitive niches as there is a huge market of searchers out there - and Googling one of them (e.g. weight loss) surely shows that there are millions (148 million results). It is what you offer and how you build traffic and a list that will count in the long run - included in this is how your credibility is established and respected.
All The Pie Or a Bit Of It?
Steve Weber has written "It's better to have a small piece of a small pie than NOTHING from too large of pie" - but, if it is too small there will be too small a pool of customers to justify the efforts you put into your niche.
Of course, you can get lost in a huge market competing with established marketers as well. The key to avoiding this is to choose a sub-niche within the larger niche and focus on that.
And, that sub-niche needs to have a different slant or focus that will assist solve a problem/issue or offer a product or information that someone needs.
For example if your large niche is golf, then perhaps a smaller niche could be golfing holidays or antique golf clubs (not that there would be much market in that!) I include it as an example as it would be a high ticket item.
More Value In Higher Priced Tickets
Marketer Steve Weber makes a salient point that it is not worth the time to focus on low-priced items (e.g. a flashlight), but seek items where there is more money to made with higher ticket items. This certainly will help with the bottom line in smaller buying pools. With low-priced ones then volume is the only way to make a decent profit - and the thing against this is that the pool is too small to develop that required volume.
You can get an idea of profit levels if you use Clickbank for your products as they show the percentage of profit. Likewise with Commission Junction.
You will also get a idea from how many AdWords are displayed - this will indicate some AdSense potential.
You do need a website - and to save use something like WordPress - but use the static pages as this will be more like a regular website and more search engine friendly. There are very affordable hosts that use WP.
Use your best keywords well - in the domain name, the title and so on. Don't just build a site and sit back - drive traffic (e.g. through article marketing) and build your list. Non-targeted traffic will not be a major source of income, but your list will be.
