Internet Marketing Basics - Step by Step Guide For Newbies

Over $180,000,000,000 (180 billion) dollars are going to be spent online this year. Astonishing quantities of common people are diverting from their day job to Internet Marketing. A common trend seems to be floating around that "As soon as you setup a sale your hard life is over, you will now be generating cash on autopilot." Before you read this article, you need to understand what you are getting into. Let's draw a clear line between what we are hoping for, and the real deal.

I wish Internet Marketing was:

"After four days of working online I built a website and hit the first page of Google under multiple search phrases. My website gets thousands of visitors a day, and that traffic is quickly converts into sales. I'm making well over $1,500 a day, and money pours into my accounts while I sleep. I already purchased a superb vacation to a 5-star hotel to Hawaii. I am completely confident that my website will handle itself while I'm gone."

In reality, Internet Marketing is:

"After three months of staying up late, and working for countless hours, I have finally produced a $30 sale. I made a website, filled it with high-quality content, and then spent days trying to get traffic. I have wrote countless articles, joined several free traffic systems, and used many different forms of advertisement. My work is finally starting to pay off, as my website is now getting a decent amount of traffic. My efforts definitely did not pay off as fast as I hoped, and I am yet to receive the big check, but I can see the potential starting to build."

So, do you think you have what it takes to work for countless hours without seeing a penny in sight? 97% of "attempting" Internet Marketers will fail. The other 3% have an incredible amount of perseverance, and you also will require it. But be confident! You can do it, it just won't be easy. Ready to learn how? Okay, lets get started.

Affiliating

It is estimated that over $2,100,000,000 (2.1 billion) will be paid out to affiliates in 2010. This is where almost all newbies start. Affiliating means selling the product of someone else. That means you can start making money online without promoting your own service or merchandise. For this process, I highly recommend using ClickBank. ClickBank is a huge online marketplace where vendors have posted their products for affiliates to sell them. ClickBank works like this:

You sign up for a free account, and you now have the ability to create Hoplinks (more on this later).
You scan the marketplace for items you would like to sell. It is very important that you aim for products of a category that you already have expertise in (I will explain why later).
You see a product you would like to promote. You click "Create Hoplink" and enter your user-name. You may also enter a tracking ID but this is not currently important.
You get the Hoplink and promote it on a website. If a customer clicks on your Hoplink and buys the product, you get paid up to 75% (varies for each product) of the profit.

Sounds easy, right? Not exactly. I want you to think about how many times you have bought something online, but not from an official business (like Wal-Mart, eBay, etc.). You might have trouble remembering, because chances are it has not happened too many times.

That is because customers, or Net surfers, avoid sales pitches. They did not come on the internet to be lured into cash being pulled out of their pocket, they came for the information. When someone visits your website, do you think they are focusing on your wants, or needs? No. The only thing they are after is the information. They have this thought stuck in their head, "I searched for what I wanted on Google. If you do not have it, I'm hitting the back button and trying the next result." Web surfers simply don't care about you.

In essence, you must master the art of PRE-selling. Yes, not making money, or generating income, but PRE-selling. You absolutely must give the visitor what he/she wants before you even think about asking for a penny out of their stash. A lot of people who read this article will simply ignore this concept and still try to send their visitor through their Hoplink as soon as they get the chance. The truth is, even if your guest "accidentally" clicks on your link this way, they will feel 'pitched', and frustrated. The goal is to send your traffic through your Hoplink with a trusting, willing-to-buy feeling.

That being said, lets make a website, the right way. As far as hosting goes, you can build a sub-domain for free with Yola. For a real website, the lowest cost I found (about $20 a year) is at GoDaddy. The four steps to being a successful affiliate when creating a website are:

Brainstorm. What is the goal of your website? What do you want your visitors to learn while viewing it (even if they do not buy something)? Since you will have to add information to your website you must promote a product related to what you know. For example, lets say your hobby/sport is Tennis. You love Tennis. You make a theme-based content site all about Tennis, in which you share a lot of high-quality information. Then, you promote a product that helps people save energy at home. This makes no sense! It will only leave your visitors confused.
Content. Fill your website with content. Do not worry a single bit about selling a product, just explain to your future-traffic everything they need to know about your hobby (which should be the theme of your website).
Drive Traffic. There can be no online business without traffic. Find a way to drive visitors to your website. You could write articles for online directories, you post videos on YouTube, you could even pin ads on local telephone poles! Just do whatever works.
Warm up your visitors to make the purchase. This step is easy, because you most likely already fulfilled it with step 2. If you filled your website with high-quality, tip-top information, they will trust you. You will no longer be a stranger on the internet, but a friend with a recommendation (or Hoplink!).
Monetize. After you have done everything else, it is finally time to say "Hey, this is a great product." Do not be forceful, or act superior over them, just recommend it with multiple good reasons.

Congratulations! After these five steps, you will be on the right track to success online. Are you done? Definitely not. At this point just keep driving in more traffic.

Google AdSense

This is another simple method to make money online. Yes, I do recommend placing ads from Google on your website, but I still believe that affiliating should be your main source of income. Sign up for a free account with Google AdSense, make an ad, and post the html code onto your website. Do not place your ads anywhere to distracting, making it difficult for visitors to explore your content.

These will be your two best sources of income as a starting new Internet businessman. Internet Marketing builds amazingly well off the snowball effect, so the more you work, the faster you will see the results. Just keep at it, your hard efforts will pay off.
