You may have heard of affiliate marketing, and thought, "what the hell is that?"
Basically, affiliate marketing is selling someone's product or having someone else sell your product in the online world. It's very similar to the brick and mortar B2B marketing efforts some companies utilize.
It can be more complicated than just selling someone's product or having your product sold. For example you could have a product you wish to be sold online, but you are unable to afford national marketing campaigns to obtain enough traffic to your site to sell the product on your own. So, you join an affiliate program, upload your promotional verbiage, and let other people do the advertising for you. For every lead, sale, or click (you choose) the affiliate will receive a specific amount or percentage for their efforts.
Essentially you are paying far less to have hundreds of people advertise your product for you, increasing your ROI. Who wouldn't want that???
Now, the fun part! If you do not have a product, but you do have a website with the ability to advertise, you can be paid for your efforts without any out of pocket expense! You sign up as an affiliate on affiliate networks, sift through the products that relate to your website's content, download the marketing materials (banner ads, text, widgets), and advertise per any guidelines outlined in the affiliate agreement. Some affiliate programs will approve you automatically and some will manually approve you.
There are several affiliate sites you can sign up for, but the following sites are the most known and reputable:
Shareasale.com - A leading affiliate network that is the best place to begin your affiliate ventures.
CommissionJunction.com - One of the oldest and most robust affiliate networks in the industry
ClickBank - A well known and uber successful affiliate product site; but watch out for scams. Thankfully this site has an easy return policy for people that purchase products.
Amazon.com -We all know Amazon, but we are not all familiar with Amazon Associates, their affiliate program. This program is amazing and easy to navigate and use.
Google's Affiliate Network - And, finally, most of us are familiar with Google AdSense, but many people do not know about their affiliate network. Its a little more difficult to navigate for a novice, but if you know a little bit about the program, Google walks you through it!
If you want to learn more about affiliate marketing and the best marketing practices, etc. you will want to read Missy Ward and Shawn Collin's book, the founders of AffiliateSummit.com! I've recommended several books below, and I do suggest, if you want to make money doing this, you really do need to educate yourself.
